I've got my art supplies...

what do I do next?

We get it, grad school didn't prepare us for the real world...the one where clients don't like to TALK or do WORKSHEET all the time! Introducing art into therapy sounds like a good idea, until you realize you just don't know how to incorporate art into grief, loss and trauma work. The Got Art? Series will help alleviate those frustrations and get you on track for creating with your clients. This module focuses on the how to build in CCPT and directive skills into therapy services with children, tweens and teens for grief, loss and trauma. Models of therapy, including CCPT, Adlerian and CBT will be interwoven into the workshop. Directive and non-directive approaches will be shared as well as ways to integrate into the art, play, sandtray or traditional talk therapy office. This is an interactive video - please bring art supplies to create alongside the presenter!

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

  1. Define grief, loss and trauma and how they show up in art, play and sandtray
  2. Identify how grief, loss and trauma present by ages
  3. Understand the theoretical difference between directive versus non-directive art making
  4. Incorporate at least 3 uses of art making after a death, loss or trauma
  5. Link art making to sandtray, play and other modalities in therapy

Grief

An estimated 6 million children in the United States will experience the death of a parent or sibling by age 18. This course will focus on best practice support of grieving children, tweens and teens

Loss

Children, tweens and teens are bombarded by loss throughout their young lives. From moving, ending of friendships, changing grades to deployment, divorce, incarceration, absent parents, losses can deeply impact childhood development.

Trauma

At least 1 in 7 children have experienced child abuse and/or neglect in the past year, and this is likely an underestimate. Children are at risk for a variety of traumatic experiences, but it can be hard to talk about! Art activities can help process and support childhood trauma.
